11. Joy Has A Name // 4 A Christ-shaped Mind - Matt Carvel // Philippians 2:1-4
The humility of Christ (which is about to be unpacked in the following passage) is a demonstration of the other-person focus of the Gospel. Love is selfless, not selfish.
Perhaps the angst of the contemporary Christian is that they attempt to live between two worlds: the self-centredness and individualism of the present age, and the radical humility of Christ and the Gospel. Looking to others’ interests is regarded as a good thing today, perhaps an additional aspect on the periphery of day to day life, but Paul seems to suggest that the Christian life should revolve around it.
But again, this is not a wearying command - it is an invitation to fellowship with Christ and a path full of encouragement and love. Even secular philosophers recognise that Jesus’ teaching, ‘it is better to give than to receive’ is demonstrably true, yet it is a promise we struggle to fully believe and live out. It requires faith.
The cross, obviously, is the ultimate example of ‘looking to the interests of others’. Christ chooses our salvation at the cost of his pain and death. Such is the love of God.
