09. Joy Has A Name // 5 The Humility and Glory Of Christ - Matt Carvel // Philippians 2:5-11
Recap
A common question that people ask about Christianity is, why, if God is real, does He not make His existence more obvious to us. We ask this question because we want things to be simple and straightforward. However, we see in the bible that God chooses to reveal Himself on His own terms, through Jesus. The birth of a baby 2000 years ago may not seem obvious but it speaks to the nature of God. It demonstrates His humility in coming quietly to earth to serve, leaving heaven and becoming a man.
This passage follows on from what we’ve previously heard, that our minds must be transformed through seeing Jesus and in this we become more like Him. God’s thoughts are different from our thoughts. Therefore, there are some things that we are not able to comprehend, but the more that we see Jesus, the more that we are able to begin to understand.
Paul explains that Jesus is, in very nature, God. When He became a man He did not stop being God but He gave up the comfort and privileges of heaven and entered into a form of weakness. He took on physical flesh in order to live a perfect life and die a sinner's death in the place of us.
God has revealed Himself to us in the incarnation of Jesus, not telling us that He exists but showing us what He’s like and how much He loves us. When we see this it wins our hearts to Him. One day everyone will see the glory of God and we will all have to bow down to Him and confess that He is Lord. Will you now receive Him with humility and bow down to Him voluntarily and worship Him because you see who He is?
1. Humbly accept that you need God in your life and come to Him.
2. Look to Jesus and allow your thoughts to be renewed and transformed to be more like His.
3. See what Jesus has done for you and bow the knee voluntarily because you will bow to Him one day.
