As a church and family it is important that we recognise what it is when we give. The thing is with God is that you never come to the finish line in understanding who He is and fully grasping what it means to be generous. There is always more to learn about God and the beautiful thing about Him is that He always wants to give us more. This talk is about God being a provider.
In Philippians, the apostle Paul writes a letter to the church in Philippi in Greece. Paul at this time was writing from prison. In this letter he is rejoicing and encouraging the church in their giving. He is excited about what is going on in their hearts because as they give they are learning more about God as their provider.
God is a supplier- God is not just a father Christmas giving around all year, but by His very nature He is a provider and is incredible at doing so. He is a holy God who lives eternally and desires an intimate relationship with us. There are charities that provide all over the world, but God’s provision in comparison to these charities is huge. We are always discovering how vastly He provides.
In the beginning there was God and out of His overflow of affection and love He began to create. This is the God that created all things, so when we talk about God being a provider, we shouldn’t reduce Him to being just similar to you and I. He is so much more than that. As humanity multiplies, He doesn’t just sit back and wait to see how we get on, but He continually provides and has been doing so from the beginning of creation.
There is a particular key moment in history where we really start to grasp the magnitude of God as provider, as He provides us with his Son. Jesus led an incredible life on earth and as you look at His kindness, you start to grasp the provision of God. He moved from place to place, bringing provision and freedom for people who were oppressed.
God in His kindness provided a way where we didn’t have to face death in the way we deserve because of what Christ taking our place on the cross. God has also provided His Holy Spirit, His Word and is providing us life. God provides in an immeasurable way. God’s provision does not mean that you will never face problems- it’s not like a slot machine where you put a penny in and millions of pounds come out. However, He still remains t be a provider for you. Before you existed and took your first breath, God was providing for you. He did this so that the righteous life of Jesus could be accredited to you. Jesus Christ went to the cross in the knowledge that we were a sinful people. There is something rich about this. The provision of God is not to be sneered at or underestimated. It is something that we must grasp and it does us good to do so.
God provided eternal life and one day we will see Him face to face and He will look upon us and see no blemish in us. Paul believes this and is wearing what Jesus has done and learning from it. However, the reality is some of us don’t own it in the way we should. In this letter, Paul is excited about the church giving because as they give there is a heart transformation happening, knowing that God meets all our needs. If it is true of these people of this church back then, then it is also true for the church now as nothing about the story of Jesus has changed. The riches of God in glory in Christ Jesus are massive. God is pouring out His provision on us, even when we don’t realise it. Ultimately, it is a matter of the heart. As you give, you are finding out more about God’s provision.
This ‘Level Up’ series is about going deeper into a more intimate place with God. He has given us everything so that we can find joy in giving.
