This series is going through the last stages of King David’s life when he experiences betrayal from his son, Absalom, who usurps his position as King, leading David to leave the city. The idea of being betrayed or personal rejection and feeling as if we don’t fit in in some way is something we have all may have experienced in some form. To follow Jesus is to embrace the possibility that we may not always fit into mainstream culture. Here, David is experiencing this similarity of being exiled. David went to The Mount of Olives in exile, where olives are pressed for oil to come through. Similarly, Jesus spent his last night before his crucifixion praying in this same location. This symbolizes both David and Jesus each going through their own type of pressures and experiencing betrayal. David was rejected by his son and the same nation of Israel that Jesus was rejected by.
Points to remember when experiencing pressurised situations:
1. God is quietly busy – Even in seemingly disastrous situations, God is quietly busy. One of the men close to David (Ahithophel) was turning on him joining Absalom. David’s response which seemed surprising in this situation was setting up a scheme in this sending one of his more loyal men (Hushai) to go back in the city and give advice to Absalom to cleverly lead him and his advisors astray. This was quietly successful. Absalom had treacherously turned the nation away from his father. When everything looked most lost and bleak to the nation of Israel having a new king such as Absalom, God was quietly working in the process. We generally cannot quite see what God is doing. We often think we can but we our ability to see Gods ways is often obscured by the things we can see plainly and feel in front of us. Christians will often feel the sense that the culture is swinging further away from what God says and leave us feeling marginalised. We may feel like this in the dark moments, but even then, God is working towards something great. We see this in the Easter story of Good Friday. What may have looked bleak on the outside was actually part of God’s bigger plan for humanity.
2. Judge very carefully- Mephibosheth was like an adopted son to David. Ziba, Mephibosheth’s servant brought gifts to David to win his favour. David mistakenly believed him, seemingly because of Ziba’s flattery. We should seek God with whom we trust. Gods greater David- Jesus- knows everything about us and is not deceived by anyone- not even by his close friends who betrayed him. He knew they would do this. Even still, knowing everything he knows about us, Christ took our accusations upon himself so that we could be declared righteous by God.
