Key scriptures: 2 Samuel 16:5 - 14
David knew what it is like to deal with opposition in trials. This particular moment in the book of 2 Samuel is a tough moment of attack for David, as he is already experiencing persecution from his son and now he is experiencing misinformed opposition from a Benjaminite named Shimei who accuses David of doing something he is not guilty of.
1. David remembers the Bigger Problem- 2 Samuel 16:11. Here we will look at David’s response to the situation and what he chooses to remember throughout it. He models that even through the trials he goes through, there are still more horrible things that could come that we truly deserve as sinners. It is worth broadening your lens to see the scale of difficulty and to force yourself to see that the problems we face are God sized and we need more than our own resources to solve them.
2. David remembers God’s Hand- 2 Samuel 16:10-11 says that God had told Shimei to curse David because God has told him to. God has even got Satan under control. We may find this hard to grasp- believing in a God who allows certain trials to happen or known about it. However, the God of the Bible is sovereign. Satan has to get permission to do things. If God wasn’t in control he wouldn’t be sovereign. We may struggle with the things that have happened in history, painful experiences and it is a good question- but we must be able to bring it to someone who is in authority and sovereign over all things. David knew that his trial would not be happening if God didn’t allow it. It still begs the question why God allows these thigs to happen to David- if he is his servant? God expresses love to his children as a father partly by discipline. Hebrews 13: 12:6 reads ‘’For the Lord disciplines the one he loves, and chastises every son whom he receives’’. It can be easy to fall into the trap, especially in 21st century conception of father only being ‘nice’ without power, leading the child falling into self-pity when faced with discipline. However, the God of the Bible is in control even in the difficulties. David understood that the process of correction may hurt, but that it is for his good in the broader picture and God is still loving him even through this. Even the cruelties we experience, is not more than what we truly deserve in our sinful nature.
3. David remembers the Grace of God- 2 Samuel 16:12- David knows he serves a God who looks at his iniquity and repays him with good through this cursing. David knows he is a sinful man and that God looks at him, even in his very worst and repays him with good through discipline. He knows he has a good father who will never stop doing good to him. David has a promise of God’s discipline but he also has a greater promise of his undeserved fatherly care not just for the rest of his life but for his family tree forever (2 Samuel 7: 8-16). He knows that God intends it all for his good.
Meditate on Gods amazing grace and receive from it, including through the trials.
