In this talk we look at how to get hold of Jesus in the midst of different difficulties and find wisdom for our lives. As we look at King David’s life we can see Jesus. Absalom is the anti-King and David is God’s appointed king at this time. Similarly, yet in a more profound way- Jesus is ultimately the perfect king.

1. Be wise with what you say- King David sent his close friend, Hushai, as a spy to Absalom to sabotage his plans. As a result, Hushai had to be wise with how he spoke and interacted with Absalom and his men. As Christians, we too have to be quite diplomatic in some of our conversations with others and think before we speak. We are to be wise in the way we conduct ourselves. Jesus says in Matthew 10:16 “Behold, I am sending you out as sheep in the midst of wolves, so be wise as serpents and innocent as Doves’’. Furthermore, Romans 12: 18 reads ‘’If possible, so far as it depends on you, live peaceably with all.’’ If we don’t live as peaceable people, people won’t really want to hear what we have to say about love and Jesus. We are trying to win others to Christ through diplomacy and not deceit. This means asking God what the right things are to say in certain situations. Jesus is our best model of being wise in difficult situations. He was countercultural but often when people would catch him out he would not be brash, but instead would have a wise word with them.

2. Being wise with what you hear- Absalom received counsel from Absalom to publicly sleep with his father’s. Absalom took this advice, missing the wisdom of God and instead falling into grave sin. We are to be wise with the counsel we receive from others. All of us are susceptible to the things around us. There may be people who have advised us very well in the past about certain things and there may be other things you do not agree on and that is ok. People are human and not infallible, so you may not agree on everything. With all the counsel you receive, you can know if you are getting good wisdom by posing the question- does this glorify God?

3. Be wise with your sin- The heart is deceitful above all things (Jeremiah 17: 9). Particularly in a society where the individual seems to be king by putting our own thoughts first before anything else, we can become our own worst counsellor. Our own hearts trip us up so much, so it is so important we speak to others about what it contains. If you do not deal with your sin there and then, your heart will get hard. The difference between Absalom and David’s response to their sin is that David felt shameful recognising his sin as sin and so there was hope for him as it led to his repentance. However, Absalom happily sinned in front of everyone and didn’t feel bad about it. repented of his sin when he realised. Absalom happily sinned in front of everyone. Isiah 5: 21 reads ‘woe to those who are wise in their own eyes and shrewd in their own sight. Don’t harden your heart; be wise about your sin by turning to God in repentance. Absalom was the bad king. Jesus is the humble king who took up our sin and shame to the cross, so that we might know and receive the freedom of his love, forgiveness and righteousness.
