Christmas is a time when who you are with is important. It is a time we tend to surround ourselves with the people that we love. It is a time that we particularly miss those we can’t be with. It is a time when, because of location or company, we want to feel at ‘home’.
The Christmas story is one in which the theme of ‘home’ is central. We all know that Mary and Joseph were far from home, struggling to find a place to even stop for the night. ‘No room at the inn!’ as the Nativity story goes.
Jesus was therefore born in a stable, far from the comforts of ‘home’. And yet, God making His ‘home’ with us is exactly what was happening. This is a rich theme throughout Scripture; God ‘presencing’ Himself with His people.
